Assassin’s Creed is a popular video game franchise developed by Ubisoft, featuring a fictional history storyline with assassins and their fight against the Templars throughout different time periods. In 2016, a live-action movie adaptation of the franchise was released.
The movie, simply titled “Assassin’s Creed,” was directed by Justin Kurzel and starred Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Charlotte Rampling. It follows the story of Callum Lynch (played by Fassbender), a descendant of the 15th-century Spanish assassin Aguilar de Nerha, who is forced to relive Aguilar’s memories through a machine called the Animus. Along with a group of modern-day assassins, Callum sets out to stop the Templars from gaining control of an artifact called the Apple of Eden, which is believed to hold the key to free will.
The movie received mixed reviews from critics and fans of the franchise. Some praised the film’s visual effects, action sequences, and faithfulness to the source material, while others criticized its convoluted plot and lack of character development.
Despite its mixed reception, the movie did manage to gross over $240 million at the box office worldwide. It was also nominated for Best Special Visual Effects at the 90th Academy Awards.
It is worth noting that, although there have been no official announcements regarding a sequel to the movie, there have been rumors and speculations about a possible second installment. However, it is unclear if and when it will be made.
In addition to the live-action movie, there have also been several animated short films and series based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise, but none of them are directly related to the movie.
